Kyushu University’s Hakozaki Campus as a Smart City

Fukuoka City, Kyushu University, and local residents have announced their desire to see IoT technology utilized in the redevelopment of Kyushu University’s Hakozaki Campus. Planning is underway to regenerate the site after the university has relocated all remaining faculties to their Ito Campus site this September. Developers hope that the use of technology will help the local area cope with declining birthrate and ageing population by supporting various projects, such as an automated community bus aimed at assisting the elderly. The goal for all concerned parties is to achieve a satisfactory level of sustainable development for the area. Voices have also called for the introduction of special devices that will help locals who have limited mobility, as well as IoT terminals that could help watch over children and older members of society. The city will work with Kyushu University to formulate a full plan this summer and will begin recruiting companies to help facilitate the regeneration project in 2020, with the aim of starting the development in 2022.
