Building regulations have been relaxed on the Tenjin Big Bang redevelopment project, including the site of the former Daimyo Elementary School. The new building can now reach as high as 115 meters (26 stories), which is a significant increase on the existing 76 meter limit. A height restriction on buildings in the city center is in place due to the area’s close proximity to Fukuoka Airport. Fukuoka’s status as a National Strategic Special Zone impacted the decision to relax the height limit on buildings from 67 meters (15 stories) to 76 meters. The Daimyo project requested for further leniency given that the existing NTT building in the same vicinity is around 115 meters. The Daimyo Elementary School closed 14 years ago and the city began exploring ideas for the site last year.
