Boasting the largest waterfall drop in Kyushu, Karatsu’s Mikaeri Falls is a breathtaking sight accompanied by a thunderous roar. This spot is also renowned for its hydrangeas, with about 40,000 plants representing 50 varieties in bloom. During the peak season, the Ajisai Festival takes place, and on weekends, a shuttle bus (¥100 one way) runs from the “Hotaru Bridge,” located about 1 km downstream from the falls, to the base of the falls. At night, the falls are illuminated (from May to September), offering a different ambiance for enjoying the falls and hydrangeas compared to the daytime.
