Fukuoka Expands Nursing Support for Medically Fragile Residents

Fukuoka City will launch a program as early as August 2025 to support families caring for individuals requiring constant medical assistance, NHK reports. The plan, included in a supplementary budget proposal, increases available in-home nursing time from 48 to 338 hours annually—a sevenfold jump.

The measure targets families looking after children or adults who need continuous care, such as ventilator support or suctioning. Additional caseworkers will also be hired to offer counseling and assistance.

This move follows the January arrest of a mother who allegedly removed her daughter’s ventilator, resulting in death, highlighting the severe pressure on caregivers. If approved, the initiative will be implemented following the City Council’s vote on June 10. Source: NHK
