Two sixth-grade boys drowned while playing near the shore in Higashi Ward, Fukuoka, on the afternoon of June 26. One was later confirmed dead after being pulled from about three meters underwater; the other remains conscious. They had been exploring tidal rocks with four friends when the incident occurred. According to a witness, the boys had ventured into deeper waters where footing was difficult. The beach, located 500 meters west of Mitoma Station, has no lifeguards or watch personnel.
