Mother Gets Suspended Sentence in Fatal Fukuoka Crash

The Fukuoka District Court sentenced a 33-year-old mother from Dazaifu to three years in prison, suspended for five years, after a crash last August in Sawara Ward killed her 7- and 5-year-old daughters and injured four people on a bus. The court found she looked away while driving, causing a head-on collision with a route bus. The judge acknowledged the severity of the outcome but also noted the defendant’s profound personal loss. The children were wearing seatbelts but were not in booster seats. After the accident, JAF revised its guidelines, recommending child or booster seats for children under 150 cm in height, raised from the previous 140 cm. Source: NHK
