Kyushu–Honshu Power Link Expansion to Boost Solar Use

Japan’s Organization for Cross-regional Coordination of Transmission Operators has announced a project to expand the power transmission capacity between Kyushu and Honshu by about 30%. The plan includes installing a new undersea cable across the Kanmon Strait to better utilize Kyushu’s abundant solar energy by sending excess power to Honshu, where demand is higher. The upgrade, estimated at nearly ¥1 trillion including construction and maintenance, will be led by Kyushu Electric Power Transmission and Distribution and two partner firms, with operations set to begin in March 2039. Capacity will rise from 2.78 million kilowatts to about 3.8 million. The project will be funded by government subsidies and shared costs among major utilities, though consumer electricity rates may be affected.
