Gokoku Shrine Nanakusa Festival
On Jan 7, the traditional Nanakusa no Sekku marks the eating of seven spring herbs to pray for good health and a fruitful year. Many associate the day with nanakusa-gayu (seven-herb rice porridge), believed to soothe the stomach after New Year’s feasting. At Gokoku Shrine, the Nanakusa Festival involves offering the herbs at the altar and praying for protection from misfortune and illness. Instead of porridge, attendees receive nanakusa mochi—a set of two rice cakes with a protective amulet—for ¥700 (limited quantity).
