Kyushu University announced it will open a new hydrogen-focused research institute in April at its Ito Campus in Fukuoka City. The Sustainable Hydrogen Research Institute will integrate three existing hydrogen-related centers, strengthening collaboration in materials, energy systems, and fuel cell research. The new institute will launch with several dozen faculty members and build on the university’s two decades of hydrogen research. While hydrogen is seen as a key next-generation energy source, challenges remain in production costs, storage, and large-scale deployment. Kyushu University stated the institute aims to advance solutions from Kyushu to the global stage, contributing to the realization of a sustainable and inclusive decarbonized society.
