NEXCO West Japan announced that tolls for the Kanmon Tunnel, which links Fukuoka and Yamaguchi prefectures under the sea, will be raised in two stages beginning in June. The toll for standard passenger vehicles will increase from the current ¥160 to ¥230 on June 1, with a further hike planned to ¥300 around 2030. The company cited rising costs related to the renewal of aging structures and facilities, as well as higher material and labor expenses. The Kanmon Tunnel opened in 1958 and is approaching 70 years of service. NEXCO West Japan also said it plans to introduce electronic toll collection systems as part of ongoing upgrades. The toll revisions aim to secure funding for maintenance and modernization of the heavily used cross-strait route. Source: NEXCO
