Oita City will open its first dedicated skateboarding facility in April at Ote Park in Funaimachi, in front of the Oita Prefectural Government building, as part of efforts to promote urban sports and revitalize the downtown area. The city allocated approximately ¥52 million for the project, with construction scheduled to begin in November. About 1,000 square meters—roughly one-third of the park—will be paved with concrete and crushed stone around the park’s central cycad tree. Curved surfaces and slopes will be installed to allow flexible course layouts. The facility will be enclosed by fencing and equipped with lighting for nighttime use. Skateboarding has grown in popularity since becoming an Olympic sport in 2021. The park is also known for its statue of Francis Xavier. Source: Nikkei / Oita Godo News / Oita City
