Smoking Rules Set to Tighten in City Center

A Fukuoka City assembly research group has drafted revisions to strengthen smoking regulations in two central districts, including areas around Hakata Station and Tenjin-Daimyo. The proposal would expand the ban beyond streets to include parks and plazas, and prohibit smoking altogether in designated zones, including while standing still. Heated tobacco products would also be explicitly included under the rules. The changes aim to address gaps in current regulations, where some smokers gather near designated areas or in open spaces. The city would also be responsible for installing signage and maintaining designated smoking facilities. The group plans to submit the ordinance revision during the June assembly session.
