Fukuoka Expands Desalination as Reservoirs Fall

The Kyushu Regional Development Bureau established a drought-response headquarters on August 20 as exceptionally low rainfall continued across Fukuoka Prefecture. The 21 main dams stood at 58.0% capacity, far below their 20-year average of 81.7%. Water levels have fallen especially sharply at the Egawa and Terauchi dams in the Chikugo River basin. The Fukuoka District Waterworks Agency will reduce its intake from the river and increase fresh water production at the Mamizupia desalination plant by 10,000 tons per day, to 30,000 tons, from August 21. Prefectural authorities are asking residents to conserve water. Source: TNC News / RKB News
