The FAF Architecture Culture Festival takes over the Fukuoka Bank Head Office in central Tenjin on Oct 3, 2026. Organized by the Fukuoka Architecture Foundation, the one-day program explores Kisho Kurokawa’s landmark building through architecture tours, talks, photography and live music, while considering the connections between architecture, public space, the city and culture.
The morning program features MAT2026 Autumn: “Secrets of the Fukuoka Bank Head Office”, an architectural tour that includes interior areas normally closed to the public. A defining feature of the Fukuoka Bank Head Office is the covered public plaza, which occupies roughly one-third of the site and forms part of the building itself, with FFG Hall located below. The tour moves from the plaza into the interior, examining the overall composition, architectural details and ideas behind Kurokawa’s design.
The afternoon program takes place in FFG Hall, beginning with a special lecture, “Kisho Kurokawa and the Fukuoka Bank Head Office,” by architectural historian Shunsuke Kurakata. Other sessions include a viewing of photographs from “50 Outstanding Examples of Fukuoka Architecture” and performances by Fukuoka International University of Music musicians Masamichi Hara on violin and Haruka Maeda on guitar. Jazz pianist Yoshiko Kishino closes the day with a solo concert. FFG Hall, known for undulating pine-clad walls and acoustics appreciated by discerning listeners, offers a setting where architecture and sound can be experienced together.
Beyond the architecture itself, the festival looks at how the Fukuoka Bank Head Office has contributed to the surrounding city through the public spaces created over nearly half a century. The program offers a chance to see the familiar streets and architecture of Tenjin from a different perspective.
