Large numbers of sardines and other fish were found dead near the mouth of the Shioiri River in Kitakyushu’s Wakamatsu Ward on Sep. 23. City contractors began removing them, but poor footing slowed the work and many remained the following day. Water samples collected at several locations on Sep. 24 showed no harmful substances, according to the city. Officials suspect larger predators drove fish into the river, where crowding and changes in temperature and salinity may have contributed to oxygen deprivation.
