teamLab: Digitized Fukuoka Castle Ruins 2026-2027
~

Fukuoka’s castle ruins deserve a visit after sunset this autumn. Returning for the first time in seven years, teamLab’s outdoor exhibition runs from October 30 to January 11, transforming familiar stone walls, trees, and steps into artworks that respond to people and nature. It offers a fresh reason to explore a historic place that can be easy to take for granted.

The setting is Fukuoka Castle Ruins in Maizuru Park. Built over seven years beginning in 1601, the castle retains impressive stone walls around its honmaru, ninomaru, and sannomaru enclosures. These walls earned it the name “Stone Castle.” For this exhibition, teamLab makes the surviving landscape part of the art, bringing light and sound into contact with stonework that has stood for centuries.

Among the works is Pillar of Constant Flux, which changes shape with the wind, rain, and humidity. In Autonomous Resonating Life, movements of people and nature trigger sequences of light and sound that spread through the surrounding works. Meanwhile, Ever Blossoming Life Tree brings an unfolding cycle of seasonal flowers to a towering tree, with blossoms appearing and scattering across its surface.

The castle walls themselves become the setting for Walk, Walk, Walk – Fukuoka Castle Ruins, a continuous procession of anonymous, varied figures. Nearby, Enso on Ancient Stone Wall draws a circle associated with Zen calligraphy across the weathered stonework. There is something quietly moving about this meeting of old walls and passing figures, with visitors adding their own presence to a place shaped by generations before them.

Because the exhibition takes place outdoors, the weather, changing season, and people nearby all influence the experience. For those who know Maizuru Park through daytime walks or cherry blossom picnics, this is a chance to see it differently. As autumn turns to winter, an evening among the illuminated ruins promises both the pleasure of discovering the artworks and a renewed appreciation of the castle grounds.

Tickets go on sale on October 1. Advance reservations for a specific date and time are required on weekends, public holidays, and December 29–31.
