Takasu Kagura Shinto Dance

Takasu Kagura has been passed down in the local community for around 550 years. Once performed by Shinto priests, it is now preserved by parishioners of Takasu Shrine. The shrine’s main hall, a medieval wooden structure built in 1541, was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2023.

The performance consists of 12 pieces in two styles. Mai Kagura features restrained dances accompanied by kagura songs, while Men Kagura uses masks and more theatrical movement to depict scenes from Japanese mythology.

Following an evening ritual, the night kagura begins at 18:00. As darkness settles over the kagura hall, visitors can experience this long-preserved ritual performing art in the distinctive, solemn atmosphere of the shrine grounds.
