Free Lookout and Urban Forest Climb
A terraced rooftop garden rises along the side of a multi-use complex beside Tenjin Central Park. Originally planted with around 37,000 trees representing 76 species, the stepped slope has gradually evolved into a surprisingly dense urban ecosystem, now home to roughly 200 varieties of plants thanks to ongoing replanting and seeds carried by birds.
Despite its location in the heart of the city, the path upward feels more like a quiet hillside forest trail than a downtown walkway. As you climb, the surrounding skyline slowly opens up, with fresh greenery in spring and colorful foliage in autumn adding to the experience. The rooftop observation deck is open on weekends and public holidays only.

A Restored Castle Turret Returns Home
Fukuoka Castle was built in 1601 by Nagamasa Kuroda. Viewed from the sea, its shape was said to resemble a crane in flight, earning it the nickname “Maizuru Castle.” The castle once featured over 47 turrets, with Shiomi-yagura Turret serving as a key defensive structure on the northwest side. After the castle was decommissioned, Shiomi-yagura Turret—along with Hanami Yagura—was relocated in 1908 to Sofukuji Temple, the Kuroda family’s ancestral temple in Hakata Ward, where it was repurposed as a Buddhist hall. In 1990, the City of Fukuoka purchased the structure and began restoration research. The original construction methods of Shiomi-yagura Turret were revealed through this process, and it was restored using both preserved original materials and new wood where necessary. The reconstruction was completed in March 2025.

See the Mermaid Bones of Hakata
Ryuguji Temple, once built along the shoreline and historically known as “Ukimi-do,” or “the hall floating on the water,” is closely tied to a longstanding local mermaid legend.
According to tradition, during the Kamakura period a mermaid became caught in a fisherman’s net and was later given a careful burial. The temple is said to have taken its name from “Ryugu,” the Dragon Palace of Japanese folklore, in connection with the story.
Inside the main hall, relics believed to be the mermaid’s bones have been preserved and can be viewed by prior appointment.

A Giant Gundam in Fukuoka
Standing nearly 25 meters tall at the entrance to LaLaport Fukuoka, this life-size Nu Gundam statue has become one of the city’s most recognizable modern landmarks. Scheduled daytime performances include movement of the head and arms, giving visitors a sense of the machine’s massive scale up close.
At night, projection-mapped shows are held roughly every 30 minutes, combining lighting, video, and music across the surrounding wall surfaces. Multiple programs rotate throughout the evening, including visuals inspired by Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash, creating a different atmosphere depending on the time of visit.

The western side of the park features playful Shinkansen-inspired design elements, including bright yellow pavement marked with track-like lines. If timing is right, visitors may even catch a glimpse of the rare “Doctor Yellow” inspection train.

Sections of the museum also break down the manufacturing process through videos and real components, offering insight into products most people use every day without thinking much about how they are made.
The building itself is also part of the experience, with a clean, design-focused interior that complements the exhibits. An online virtual museum is also available for those who prefer to explore remotely.
