Fukuoka Strawberry Exports Up
Exports of locally grown strawberries through ports under the jurisdiction of Moji Customs have skyrocketed. Compared to 10 years ago, export volume in 2012 jumped nineteenfold to 72,500 kg while export value increased by a factor of 25 to ¥137 billion. These are the second highest figures on record following peaks reached in 2008. According to a customs official, “Fukuoka’s big, fresh strawberries are popular in Asia, especially in Hong Kong.” Hong Kong accounts for more than 96% of strawberry exports, with the Taiwan Singapore and Thailand making up most of the difference.
