Supervisor for garden project in Itoshima

Jan 4, 2019 10:33 by slowlife

The project is to create a ‘Garden of Five Continents’ on a 3 acre coastal site at Shima Sakurai in Itoshima, Kyushu.

The Supervisor of the project will be required to oversee a number of volunteers, who are coming from all over the world to help to build the garden. Typically there will be 6 volunteers on site at any one time. They are part of the Workaway scheme (https://www.workaway.info/958575252792-en.html), whereby they work for 5 hours a day, 5 days a week, in exchange for free board and lodging.

The Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing the work of the volunteers, shopping for their food (they will do their own cooking), taking them to and from the station when they arrive and leave, and ensuring that they keep the house clean, and that they abide by the rules in a village environment.

The Supervisor may live in the house with the volunteers, or live out if preferred.

To date, the site has been cleared and two fields have been planted with tea plants. A vegetable garden has been made, and some planting has been done around the house. The work going forward will be to maintain the existing gardens, and to plant out the ‘Garden of Five Continents’ under the guidance of Jonathan Denby, the owner. Jonathan is the creator of Yewbarrow House Gardens in England (http://yewbarrowhouse.co.uk/), and is a well known garden designer in England and Japan. Jonathan is based in England, but he has residency in Japan, and visits several times a year.

The second house on site will be used for Airbnb stays, and possibly for teaching and training programmes, under the aegis of Slow Life Japan. The idea is to give Japanese people, most of whom are city dwellers, a taste of countryside living.

The quality we are looking for in the Supervisor is essentially enthusiasm for the project, and the ability to inspire the volunteers. A working knowledge of both Japanese and English is preferred, but not essential.

Pay will be subject to negotiation. We anticipate that the applicant will also have some other paid employment.
