The Kurume Azalea Festival, known for taking place in Kurume, a renowned producer of azaleas, is considered one of the three major plant festivals in Japan. During the festival period, the special venue inside the Kurume Ryokka Center, located south of the “Michi-no-Eki Kurume”, hosts a market where 1 million plants, saplings, and flowers of 30,000 varieties, including azaleas, are sold. The Kurume Azaleas, brought in by local farmers and available in various species, are especially popular among the 3,000~4,000 visitors. Just a 5-minute drive away, the Kurume-shi Azalea Center is open to the public for free during the spring. It offers a chance to admire around 10,000 azaleas of about 1,000 varieties from Japan and abroad, with a focus on Kurume Azaleas.
