Amakusa Ebilympics

Amakusa Ebilympics” (Shrimp Olympics) is a competition of catching Japanese tiger prawns by hand and will be held at noon on 7/26 (Sat.) at Miyazu Kaiyu Koen Beach, Oyano-machi, Kamiamakusa City, Kumamoto Pref. Amakusa Fisheries Cooperative Association hosts the event to promote cultured prawns, one of the City’s specialties. As many as 8,000 prawns will be offered in a netted-off section on the beach. Participants are encouraged to capture as many Japanese tiger prawns as possible by hand within 40 minutes. The second round of Ebilympic will be limited to 800 participants. Application must be made to the Kamiamakusa Branch of the Amakusa Fisheries Cooperative Association by post card or fax by 6/27 (Fri.). The conditions of the entry are: Groups up to 5 persons. Children-only or 4 years and younger are not allowed. The representative of the group must be aged 20 years and older. During the event, participants are recommended to wear shoes instead of sandals and clothes that you do not mind getting wet and dirty, use work gloves, and bring a net and a cool box to take the catch back home. After the event, there will be a commendation ceremony and prize drawings. Seafood BBQ and temporary shop for fishery products are available on site. In the meantime, there will be an octopus catching event targeting elementary school children at 10:00 a.m. the same day (for the first 100 kids at ¥500, door only; Registration at 9:00 a.m. ~).
