Aso Caldera International Symposium 2013

This two-day symposium, held for the first time in Aso Geopark, brings together researchers from Japan and abroad to discuss the history and future of the Aso Caldera with guest lecture by internationally renowned Volcanologist and Research Scientist, Dr. Stephen Self. Mount Aso is the largest active volcano in Japan, and its caldera is one of the largest in the world. The eruption which formed the present somma occurred approximately 300,000 years ago. The symposium discusses the caldera’s status, with keynote topics including “The effects of super-eruptions on the global environment and climate”, “Caldera in Japan and Kyushu”, “What would happen if Ultra Plinian occured today?” and “The land of Aso Volcano and human life”.
