A long-standing year-end ritual held at Atago Shrine, one of Fukuoka’s most revered spiritual sites, the “Dai Saito Gomaku” fire ceremony invites participants to cast wooden prayer sticks (gomagi) into a sacred fire. As flames rise, individuals walk barefoot across the embers to cleanse misfortunes and purify body and mind. Open to all, this solemn Shinto rite offers a chance to reset before welcoming the New Year amid the crisp winter air.
