Torikai Hachimangu Shrine, with a history spanning around 1,800 years, hosts this autumn festival built around the theme of “tori,” the Japanese word for bird or chicken. Vendors join through all kinds of playful “tori” connections, from serving chicken and egg dishes to having a bird in their shop name or staff members born in the Year of the Rooster.
Food stalls around the shrine grounds will serve karaage fried chicken, chicken pho, omurice, chicken sandwiches, curry, smoothies, and more. Visitors can also take part in workshops including original spice blending, slime making, and sand art, alongside traditional festival games such as target shooting and candy mold cutting.
Torikai Hachimangu is also known as the Fukuoka base of Kokonoe Stable during the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament. Each morning of the festival, an akachan dohyo-iri, a ceremonial “baby ring entrance,” will also be presented at the shrine.
