Interview with Phil Wang by Comedy Fukuoka

We’re very excited about you coming to Fukuoka. You’ve probably never heard of it before this tour. From just the name alone, what kind of place do you expect it to be?
No I hadn’t heard of it. Though it’s a beautiful name. I’m imagining a lot of Japan to look like the towns in the ‘Digimon’ Playstation game I had in the early 2000s. I told my Japanese hairdresser about Fukuoka and she said it’s famous for spicy cod roe. So I will be expecting that, I suppose.

We want you to have the best show possible. What can we do to make sure we’re the best crowd we can be?
Sit down. Get comfortable. Hold in farts until after the show. Though I will allow it if I am struggling to make anyone laugh.

We’ll be the last stop on your first Asian tour. Does this mean we’ll have the best show?
Yes. Immigration won’t let me leave unless it is.

What do you imagine expats in Japan to be like? How do you plan to make them laugh?
I expect them to be Asia-loving legends. I plan to make them laugh by tickling them with a small EU flag.

Ollie Horn, the host of your show, went to Oxford. You went to Cambridge. Can you settle the question once and for all… which is better?
Cambridge.

Fukuoka Now is a guide to all of the wonderful things that you can do in Fukuoka as a tourist. When you’re not performing, what do you hope you’ll be able to do?
Eat. Decipher Kana writing. Eat. Search for kinky vending machines. Eat food. Bow to EVERYBODY.

If you weren’t coming to Japan to perform comedy, what would you be doing?
Netflix.

Some people reading this interview may not have made plans for April 9th. How could you convince them to come to the show, using as few words as possible?
Comedy show come laugh funny man!
