This 1,600-year-old tsuina (ceremony to exorcise evil spirits) is one of Japan’s three main fire festivals. After being guarded for seven days, the “devil fire” is transferred to six enormous, 13 m torches, which are then carried around the grounds by men in loincloths. It’s good luck if the ash falls on you!
