This 1,600-year-old tsuina (ceremony to exorcise evil spirits) is one of Japan’s three main fire festivals. After being guarded for seven days, the “devil fire” is transferred to six enormous, 13m torches, which are then carried around the grounds by men in loincloths. It’s good luck if the ash falls on you!
