Kyokusui no En is a Shinto ritual that recreates a court ceremony from the Heian period. In a traditional garden, participants dressed in elegant court attire sit along a stream, compose waka poetry before a sake cup floating downstream passes in front of them, then lift and drink from it. The graceful ritual also carries a purification meaning, as the flowing water symbolically washes away impurities. Held annually at this time of year, the event includes a ceremonial procession along the shrine approach from around 12:00. Free standing areas are available around the garden, but they tend to fill up early, so arriving with plenty of time is recommended.
