A designated Fukuoka Prefecture Intangible Cultural Treasure, this fascinating festival sees a daiguuji (priest) drink a large cup of sake, don white robes and complete a ritual while twelve children enthusiastically throw mud at him. The more mud that sticks, the better the next year’s harvest is said to be.
