Kitaya is a kura (sake warehouse) with a history that stems back to the Bunsei Era (1818-1830). The festival celebrates the creation of new sake, and centers around the traditional ceremony in which the shop’s sugidama (cedar balls) are changed. This takes place to notify the public that the shinshu (freshly brewed sake) is ready. This event is exceptionally popular and you can join in by buying a specially made sake glass. Once bought, you can sample as many different varieties of sake as you want!
