Hakata Dontaku

START: May 3, 2024 END: May 4, 2024

Celebrate Golden Week in Fukuoka with the annual ‘Hakata Dontaku’ festival, a vibrant tradition that draws up to two million spectators over two days. Derived from the Dutch word ‘Zondag,’ meaning ‘holiday,’ Dontaku is one of Japan’s most prominent festivals. The festivities begin with the historic ‘Hakata Matsubayashi,’ which has an 840-year legacy. The celebration features the Three Lucky Gods riding horses, joined by a children’s procession, visiting over 150 commercial and corporate locations across the city. Moreover, 39 designated performance stages throughout Fukuoka host an array of events, transforming the city into a festive hub.
