Before WWII, people in Hakata made mochi (sticky rice) cakes in the new year to the sound of the shamisen and taiko drums, and this tradition re-emerged in 1996. Rice is steamed on a shichirin grill and then pounded. Finally, the mochi cakes are handed out to the public on a first-come-first-served basis.
