Held across Yanagawa to commemorate poet Kitahara Hakushū on the anniversary of his death, Nov. 2, this festival celebrates one of the city’s most beloved figures. Around 40 donko-bune boats decorated with lanterns form a 4 km water parade, departing in sequence from the Hakushū Shi-hien monument area in Okinohata. Visitors can enjoy traditional performing arts on temporary stages along the route while taking in the torch-lit canals at night. Boat reservations open around August each year on the official website and fill quickly, but the enchanting atmosphere can also be enjoyed from the canal paths.
