Organized by the Consulate General of India in Fukuoka, this two-day festival presents Odissi at ACROS Fukuoka on Sep 28 and Kyushu National Museum on Sep 29, 2026. Led by Indian Odissi dancer Gaurishankar Dash, the eight-member troupe combines rhythmic footwork, fluid movement, intricate hand gestures and expressive facial movements to bring stories and spiritual themes to life.
Originating in Odisha in eastern India, Odissi is one of India’s oldest classical dance traditions, with a history spanning more than 2,000 years. It developed as a sacred temple dance performed as an offering to deities. Its graceful movements, hand gestures known as mudras, and facial expressions convey stories, prayers and spiritual themes drawn from Hindu mythology and epic literature.
The festival is part of the Consulate’s efforts to introduce Indian culture and art in Fukuoka, strengthen cultural exchange and people-to-people ties between India and
Kyushu, and support the wider India–Japan partnership.
Admission is free for both performances, but advance registration is required.
