Experience the Autumn Grand Festival of Karatsu Shrine, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Event: Spanning three days and attracting around 500,000 visitors, this is one of Japan’s most celebrated festivals. The festivities kick off on November 2nd at 19:30 when 14 elaborately decorated floats, each unique to its local community, begin their journey from Oteguchi, located near Karatsu Shrine.
On November 3rd and 4th, the lively sounds of traditional music and spirited calls from the float pullers fill the air as the floats parade through the old castle town of Karatsu. The highlight of the event comes on the 3rd at the ‘Hikikomi’ ceremony performed at the Nishi-no-Hama pilgrimage site, where these magnificent floats demonstrate their grandeur and artistry.
