This special bridegroom festival sees newlyweds put on shimekomi loincloths before engaging in a range of religious rituals. During the Taru-seri section of the event, up to 50 grooms fight for possession of a sacred sake barrel in a pond located just in front of Kasuga Shrine. The ceremony comes to a close with the newlyweds parading around a bonfire. The festival was designated as an important intangible folk cultural property in 1995.
