Just a 10-minute city-run ferry ride from Meinohama Wharf, Nokonoshima is home to Nokonoshima Island Park, known for its seasonal flowers. In late December the landscape shifts to winter scenery as 50,000 Japanese narcissus bloom against the backdrop of Hakata Bay, carrying a delicate fragrance on the sea breeze. Sasanqua, a Japan-native species, also bloom from late November to late January, scattering petal by petal unlike camellias that fall whole. It’s a peaceful time to enjoy the island’s quiet winter atmosphere.
