Cafes, bookshops, galleries, bakeries, coffee roasteries and even eyewear shops become venues for this grassroots cultural festival across Ropponmatsu. Artists, writers and creators team up with local businesses to present exhibitions, sales, screenings and other activities tailored to each space. Now in its third year, the festival brings together 32 shops and facilities, making the neighborhood’s distinctive independent businesses part of the experience.
Once home to a Kyushu University campus, Ropponmatsu grew as a student neighborhood. Older residential streets and independent shops remain alongside newer developments, creating a mix of old and new local culture. Visitors can explore the participating venues at their own pace, stopping for coffee or browsing artwork along the way.
For exploring the neighborhood, pick up the Ropponmatsu “Favorites” Map, now available and featuring 55 shops and spots selected by the organizing committee.
