Itoshima’s Meoto-iwa in Futamigaura is a popular attraction often called the husband and wife rocks, which stand just off a sandy beach in the sea. An annual ceremony takes place on a Sunday in late April or early May to replace the shimenawa, a straw garland connecting the two rocks. This year, the ceremony is scheduled for May 3. The shimenawa, measuring 30 meters in length and weighing 1 ton, requires the strength and coordination of 60 men to hang. Preparation for the shimenawa begins around 8:00 am, and from approximately 14:00 the 60 men walk along the receding tide and climb the rocks to hang the sacred rope.
