Scrolls: Depictions of Tenjin

START: Dec 9, 2023 END: May 6, 2024

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, known as the God of Learning, celebrates the life and legacy of this renowned scholar and politician who was later revered as Tenjin-sama. With a collection of over 140 pieces depicting Tenjin-sama as an object of devotion, the shrine now proudly presents a special exhibition featuring 40 carefully selected works, spanning from the 14th to the 20th century.

A highlight of this exhibition is the first public display of the long-lost “Sansui Kachō-zu Byōbu” (Landscape and Birds Folding Screen) by Kanō Sansetsu, a 17th-century artist. Rediscovered after 82 years, this masterpiece is especially noteworthy. The screen portrays 33 different bird species, including the Uso, a protective bird associated with Tenjin-sama. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to immerse in the imaginative world of Sansetsu, a Hizen-born painter known for his visionary and whimsical style, predating even the famous Itō Jakuchū.

Experience the rich artistic tradition honoring Tenjin-sama and delve into the unique creativity that has captivated devotees for centuries at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.
