This autumn festival on Shikanoshima celebrates the island’s food and culture from afternoon into the night. The Shikaumi Shiosai Yokocho food area brings together around 20 vendors from the island and beyond, serving seafood dishes such as grilled local cuttlefish alongside other specialties. Kinin Taiko drumming and colorful fishing flags traditionally flown to celebrate a plentiful catch add to the festive atmosphere.
A market also features specialties from Azumino in Nagano Prefecture, a city with historical ties to Shikanoshima.
After sunset, around 650 paper lanterns, bamboo lanterns and bamboo lamps illuminate Shikaumi Shrine and its approach, transforming the scene for the evening.
The island is approximately 30 minutes from Hakata Ferry Terminal by municipal ferry. Festival participants receive a 10% discount on the round-trip fare, plus a welcome drink. The sea crossing offers a scenic start to an autumn visit to Shikanoshima.
