Symbolizing the Obon traditions of Nagasaki, the Spirit Boat Procession is an annual ritual held on August 15 to pay respects to the spirits of the departed. Participants create handmade boats and parade through the town, honoring their loved ones. These distinctive boats are decorated based on the hobbies and preferences of the deceased, and as August approaches, a diverse array of boats can be seen throughout the streets.
On the day of the event, as dusk falls, the sound of bells ringing and the chanting of “Doi, Doi” fill the air, accompanied by the resounding crackle of firecrackers. The procession continues late into the night, creating a memorable and poignant tribute to those who have passed on. Experience this unique Nagasaki tradition and honor the spirits of the departed in a uniquely beautiful and respectful way.
