THINNING comes to Hakata Hankyu with a market that raises awareness of challenges facing Japan’s forests through shopping and hands-on experiences. Inspired by the practice of thinning—the selective removal of trees to allow light into neglected forests and restore their health—the event encourages visitors to discover small, practical ways to support sustainable forestry in everyday life.
Brands connected to forests, regional communities, and craftsmanship will offer furniture, ceramics, food, and lifestyle goods. On Aug. 9 (11:30 and 14:00), handpan musician Hinako Urago will give live performances, along with a handpan workshop for children. Combining shopping, music, and interactive experiences, the market offers an engaging way to learn more about the future of Japan’s forests.
