Takatoyama Park, one of Kitakyushu’s best-known flower-viewing spots in Wakamatsu, hosts its annual early summer hydrangea festival. The park is home to approximately 74,900 hydrangea plants, making it one of the largest hydrangea displays in Fukuoka Prefecture.
A special sub-event takes place on June 7 to coincide with the peak bloom of delicate mountain hydrangeas native to forests and streams across Japan. Main events follow on June 14 and 21, when the larger Western hydrangeas reach their best. Throughout the festival period, visitors can also enjoy local food stalls, kitchen cars, and a flea market.
From the hilltop park, sweeping views of Dokai Bay and the Wakato Bridge add to the experience, allowing visitors to enjoy both seasonal flowers and the surrounding scenery. On June 14, free shuttle buses will also operate from Wakamatsu Station and the Wakamatsu ferry terminal to the park summit.
