This cafe and shop combo is owned and operated by Fukutaro, one of Fukuoka’s most well-known producers of mentaiko (spicy cod roe). Here you can enjoy mentaiko on a bowl of warm rice, just like you would at a typical Fukuokan’s home. The reasonably priced mentai bowl, which comes with miso soup, an appetizer, a raw egg and pickles, features unlimited servings of the flavored mentaiko of the day. Meanwhile, one rice refill is free and subsequent refills are ¥150 per bowl. If you want to eat like a true local, mix the raw egg into the rice, then top it with the mentaiko. Stop by the in-house shop to buy some goodies to take home, including various kinds of mentaiko and the popular menbei, a mentaiko infused rice cracker. On the third floor of the same building is Fukutaro’s standing bar, Kakuuchi Fukutaro. Drop by and enjoy mentaiko and other reasonably priced local dishes paired with beer, wine, sake and shochu.
