One of Fukuoka’s greatest attractions is how closely city life and the sea coexist. Within a 30 km radius of Fukuoka City Hall, there are 12 official swimming beaches, ranging from urban waterfront spots such as Seaside Momochi to the more relaxed shores of Itoshima and Fukutsu. Some are just minutes from downtown, while others take a little more effort to reach, but each offers its own atmosphere and local character.

Swimming is only part of the experience. Stand-up paddleboarding, surfing, seaside cafes, and sunset walks offer different ways to enjoy the coast throughout the day and across the seasons. In recent years, Fukuoka’s seaside lifestyle has become one of the region’s defining attractions, drawing growing attention from visitors both within Japan and abroad.

This guide introduces beaches in and around Fukuoka, with practical information on access, parking, facilities, and local rules, while also highlighting the atmosphere and culture that make each destination unique. Whether you’re planning a family beach day, a casual swim, or a relaxing afternoon by the water, it can help you find the right stretch of coast.

A note on terminology: an “official swimming beach” is defined by local ordinances as a beach that meets standards for water quality, safety, and recreational use. This differs from beaches where swimming may simply be possible or tolerated.

Before visiting, be sure to check and follow local rules. BBQs, fireworks, loud music, and other activities are restricted or prohibited at many beaches. Respect the local community, other visitors, and the natural environment so everyone can enjoy Fukuoka’s coastline.

Before You Hit the Beach

1. Keep it clean
The cardinal rule is simple: leave nothing on the beach but your footprints. That means no bottles, cans, cigarette butts, or other litter. Burying waste in the sand is a no-go. Always bring a bag for your rubbish, as trash cans may not be available, especially at quieter beaches. Let’s all do our part to keep Fukuoka’s coastline clean and beautiful.

2. Fires, BBQs & Fireworks
Rules regarding BBQs, campfires, and fireworks vary from beach to beach. Unless designated facilities are provided, fires and BBQs are generally prohibited. Check local regulations before you visit, and always take any rubbish, used charcoal, and other waste home with you.

3. Respect the Beach and Others
Fukuoka’s beaches are shared by local residents, families, surfers, anglers, and visitors alike. Enjoy yourself, but be mindful of those around you. Keep noise to a reasonable level, follow local rules, and help preserve the relaxed atmosphere that makes these beaches special.

4. Play It Safe
Official swimming beaches are equipped with designated swimming areas and seasonal safety measures, but many natural beaches are not. Some coastal areas may have strong currents, high waves, rocky shorelines, or swimming restrictions. Always check local conditions before entering the water.

Many beaches do not have lifeguards, so avoid swimming alone. Be aware of tides, rip currents, sharp rocks and shellfish, and watch for jellyfish, which typically appear from mid-August. Don’t forget to protect yourself from the strong Kyushu sun, and be prepared for sudden summer thunderstorms that can quickly turn a perfect beach day into a dash for cover.

Moomochihama (Sawara Ward)

Located just across the street from Fukuoka Tower, this golden sandy area is a summer hotspot in Fukuoka, with its parks, restaurants, and various recreational facilities close at hand. Jigyohama (Chuo Ward)

Stretching north of Fukuoka PayPay Dome and Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk, Jigyohama forms the western section of Seaside Momochi Beach Park. Its wide sandy shoreline and open waterfront make it a popular spot for walking, jogging, and taking in views across Hakata Bay.

Despite its central location, the beach has a relatively calm atmosphere, making it easy to slow down and spend time by the water. Jigyohama is also used for beach cleanups and community events, offering a glimpse of how Fukuoka’s urban waterfront fits naturally into everyday city life.

Bordering a residential neighbourhood, Atagohama offers a quieter side of Fukuoka’s waterfront. It’s a popular spot for local residents who come to walk, jog, or simply spend time by the sea, particularly in the evening when the sun begins to set over Hakata Bay.

The area is also home to Nishi Fukuoka Marina and the Meinohama Passenger Ferry Terminal, where ferries depart for Nokonoshima Island, reinforcing its close connection to life on the water. Nokonoshima (Nishi Ward)

Just a 10-minute ferry ride from Meinohama, Nokonoshima is a small island in the heart of Hakata Bay that feels a world away from the city. Known for its seaside scenery and relaxed atmosphere, it has long been a popular getaway for Fukuoka residents seeking an easy escape into nature.

The island is home to several beaches, the largest of which is part of the Nokonoshima Campground. With facilities including changing rooms, showers, and bungalows for overnight stays, it is a popular choice for families, groups of friends, and campers. During summer, visitors come to swim, relax by the water, and enjoy the island’s laid-back pace. Ferries can become crowded on summer weekends, so arriving early is recommended.

Nagatare (Nishi Ward)

About a 10-minute walk from JR Imajuku Station, Nagatare is a gently curving shoreline along Imadu Bay, offering views across Hakata Bay to Nokonoshima. While it is not an official swimming beach, its calm waters and open coastal scenery make it a popular spot for walking, jogging, and simply enjoying the sea.

The beach is especially appealing in the evening, when the water and the silhouette of Nokonoshima are bathed in the colors of the setting sun. Popular with local residents, it offers a relaxed glimpse of Fukuoka’s everyday seaside lifestyle and some of the area’s most quintessential coastal views.

Please note that park improvement works are currently underway along parts of the shoreline, and some areas may be affected by construction.

Shikanoshima (Higashi Ward)

Known as the discovery site of Japan’s National Treasure gold seal, Shikanoshima is one of Fukuoka’s best-known coastal destinations. Accessible from central Fukuoka in under an hour by train, bus, car, or ferry, the island offers an easy escape from the city without venturing far.

Located just across Shikanoshima Bridge from Uminonakamichi, Shikanoshima Beach is known for its white sand and clear waters. On clear days, visitors can enjoy sweeping views across Hakata Bay toward Fukuoka Tower and Mizuho PayPay Dome.

In addition to swimming, the island is a popular destination for cycling, scenic drives, and leisurely exploration of its coastal landscapes. Combining history, ocean views, and easy access from the city, Shikanoshima remains one of the Fukuoka area’s classic island day trips.

Katsuma / Shirase (Higashi Ward)

Located at the northern tip of Shikanoshima, the Katsuma and Shirase area offers an expansive coastline facing the Genkai Sea. Katsuma Beach is a popular summer destination, attracting families during the swimming season. About 1.7 km away, Shirase Coast features a rocky shoreline where visitors enjoy tidepooling, snorkeling, and diving.

Offshore, views extend toward Genkaijima and Nakatsushima, and at low tide, rocky outcrops emerge along the coast, creating opportunities to explore marine life along the shore. The area’s clear waters and natural scenery make it one of the more rugged and scenic corners of Shikanoshima.

A handful of traditional inns and local seafood restaurants are scattered nearby, making it easy to slow down and enjoy the island’s coastal atmosphere beyond the beach itself.

Known locally as a clam-digging destination, the beach attracts families and local residents during low tide, when the shoreline expands and visitors can explore the tidal flats on foot. Situated where Hakata Bay meets the Genkai Sea, Gannosu takes on a different character with the seasons and changing tides, offering a landscape that is never quite the same twice.

The beach is also known for its “singing sand,” which produces a distinctive sound underfoot when conditions are right. In recent years, the sandy escarpment known as the Nata Fault has attracted attention as a photogenic coastal landmark.

While Nata is not an official swimming beach, it is an ideal place for a seaside walk or a relaxing afternoon by the water. At sunset, the view across the Genkai Sea is particularly striking, drawing surfers, photographers, and local residents alike.

Futamigaura (Itoshima City)

One of Itoshima’s most iconic coastal landscapes, Futamigaura is known for its ocean views, seaside cafes, and relaxed atmosphere. The coastline is lined with cafes and restaurants, attracting visitors from across Japan and abroad who come to enjoy the scenery and spend time by the water.

Just offshore stand the famous Meoto Iwa (“Married Couple Rocks”) and a white torii gate, a combination that has become one of Itoshima’s most recognizable landmarks. Visitors can stroll along the coast, relax at a cafe, or simply take in the ever-changing views of the sea.

Futamigaura is also known as a surfing spot, attracting surfers in search of good waves throughout the year. While swimming is not permitted, the area is celebrated as one of Kyushu’s premier sunset viewpoints. Around the summer solstice, the sun sets directly between the two rocks, creating one of Itoshima’s most memorable seasonal scenes.

The Coastline of Fukutsu City

From nearby Miyajidake Shrine, there is a path going straight down to the beach known as the “Road of Light” at sunset. Best viewed from the top of the stairs of the shrine. This phenomenon can be viewed on Miyajihama, a 3-km-long sandy beach that stretches between Tsuyazaki and Fukuma, when the shallow water at low tide reflects the sky like a mirror. You can see the Fukutsu Sea Mirror when the following conditions are met.

Fukuma (Fukutsu City)

Located at the heart of Fukutsu’s 3 km-long coastline, Fukuma Beach is one of Fukuoka Prefecture’s leading destinations for marine sports. Its wide, shallow sandy beach attracts visitors throughout the year, with stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, and other water activities particularly popular.

The beachfront is lined with cafes, restaurants, marine sports shops, and accommodation facilities, creating a lively yet relaxed seaside atmosphere. More than just a beach, Fukuma offers a glimpse into the coastal lifestyle that defines much of the area.

Facing west, the beach is also known for its beautiful sunsets. As evening approaches, visitors gather along the shore to stroll, dine, and watch the sun sink below the horizon.

With its shallow waters and gentle waves, Tsuyazaki Beach is one of Fukutsu’s representative seaside destinations. Forming part of the continuous coastline that stretches through Fukuma Beach and Miyajihama, it attracts families throughout the summer swimming season.

One of the beach’s distinctive charms is its nostalgic atmosphere, with traditional beach huts still operating along the shore. After a day by the water, visitors can explore nearby Tsuyazaki Fishing Port or stroll through Tsuyazaki Sengen, a historic district known for its preserved streetscape and long maritime history.

Tsuyazaki Beach

• Parking: Available (paid, for beach hut users only)

Shingu (Shingu Town)

Shingu Beach is a long, gently curving stretch of coastline known for its white sand and scenic pine groves. Extending for approximately 2 km along the shore, the pine forest creates a distinctive coastal landscape that has long been enjoyed by both local residents and visitors.

During the summer swimming season, the beach attracts families looking to enjoy the water, while throughout the year it remains a popular spot for seaside walks and sunset viewing. Conveniently located just a five-minute walk from Nishitetsu Shingu Station, it is one of the most easily accessible beaches in the Fukuoka area.

Designated swimming areas are provided during the season, while surfing and stand-up paddleboarding can be enjoyed outside the swimming zones.

Shingu Beach

• Access: 5-minute walk from Nishitetsu Shingu Sta.
• Swimming Season: Jul. 3 ~ Aug. 30, 2026 *Allowed inside the designated swimming area.
• Parking: 160 spaces (free, available only during the season)
• Basic facilities: Toilet, beach hut (with shower and changing room for users), lifeguards (on Sat, Sun and holidays during daytime)
• BBQ: Allowed *all trash must be taken home
• Fireworks: Allowed until 22:00
• Surfing / SUP: Allowed (outside the swimming area)
