Hakata Akihaku Guide 2026: Autumn Events and Festivals in Fukuoka

From September through November, Hakata comes into its own with “Akihaku,” an annual autumn program of festivals, traditional events, walking tours, food and drink events, craft exhibitions, and cultural performances. The name combines aki, meaning “autumn,” with haku, suggesting an exposition or fair, and brings together a wide variety of events held across the Hakata area.

At the heart of Akihaku is Hakata Old Town, an area that can be explored easily on foot from Hakata Station. Historic temples and shrines, old shopping streets, narrow lanes, and long-established local businesses all sit within a relatively compact area, making this one of the best times of year to slow down and discover Hakata beyond the station and modern city center.

Autumn brings some of Hakata’s most atmospheric events. The Hakata Old Town Light-up Walk opens temples, shrines, gardens, and normally closed spaces after dark, while the Hakata Tomyo Lantern Arts Festival fills streets and historic sites with tens of thousands of handmade candle lanterns for a single evening. Elsewhere, visitors can watch Hakata geigi perform at close range, join walking and mystery rallies, browse traditional crafts, experience shrine festivals, enjoy riverside food and entertainment, or settle in with beer, shochu, and live music at some of the season’s livelier outdoor events.

Some events focus on centuries-old traditions, while others simply offer a good excuse to spend an afternoon or evening walking, eating, drinking, and seeing a different side of Hakata. Together, they make autumn one of the most rewarding seasons to explore the area on foot.
Below, we introduce the 2026 Akihaku events in chronological order, with practical details to help you plan your visit.

Sumiyoshi Shrine Reitaisai

Sumiyoshi Shrine in Hakata, said to be the oldest of Japan’s Sumiyoshi shrines, holds its annual autumn grand festival, or Reitaisai. According to tradition, the festival originated with sumo and yabusame horseback archery offered in celebration of Empress Jingu’s safe return.

The festival program includes a sumo tournament featuring local elementary and junior high school students on Oct. 12 from 9:00 until early afternoon. A mikoshi procession also travels from Sumiyoshi Shrine to Shitateruhime Shrine near Canal City Hakata from 16:30 to 17:30.

On Oct. 13, the main shrine ceremony is followed at around 11:00 by yabusame, a traditional ritual in which mounted archers shoot arrows at targets while riding on horseback.

Visitors can enter the first level and see the principal image of Dainichi Nyorai, along with richly detailed paintings depicting Japan’s four seasons, flowers, birds, and other motifs.

The interior paintings are by Japanese-style painter Rei Toriyama, who studied under Ikuo Hirayama. Created using mineral pigments and gold leaf, the decorated interior is being opened to the public for the first time in four years.

Hakata Tomyo Lantern Arts Festival 2026

For one night only, temples, shrines, historic sites, and narrow lanes across Hakata are illuminated by tens of thousands of handmade candle lanterns created by local residents. The event grew out of Hakata’s long-standing sentomyo tradition, in which lights are offered with prayers for good health, family safety, and well-being.

At locations including Kushida Shrine and Hakata Elementary School, thousands of lanterns are arranged to form large-scale illuminated artworks on the ground. From Hakata Old Town to Hakata Riverain and the area around JR Hakata Station, visitors can walk from one district to another and experience a different display of light at each stop.

Hakata Geigi Experience

Step into Hakata’s geigi culture with this intimate transformation experience in Hakata Old Town. Participants are styled as a traditional Hakata geigi with professional white makeup, a Japanese-style wig, a formal black tomesode kimono, and a Hakata-ori kenjo obi tied in the distinctive yanagi style. The full preparation takes about 90 minutes.

Afterward, participants can spend around an hour strolling through the historic streets of Hakata Old Town, home to numerous temples and shrines. Unlike a standard kimono or yukata dressing experience, this program offers the chance to experience the complete look of a Hakata geigi while exploring the neighborhood where the tradition has long been part of local culture. Only one participant is accepted per time slot.

Kawabata Night Festival

Kawabata Shopping Arcade turns into a lively festival street for the day, with flea-market finds, market stalls, food stands, and entertainment filling the 400-meter covered arcade from early afternoon into the evening.

Visitors can browse, snack, and stop for a drink as they make their way through the shopping street, while performances and other activities get underway from late afternoon on the stage in front of Kumamoto Bank. Now in its 11th year, the 2026 festival takes “Fairy Tales” as its theme, adding an extra layer of color and fun to the event.

Stretching between Canal City Hakata and Hakata Riverain, Kawabata is one of Hakata’s classic shopping streets, and on festival day it becomes even more animated, with plenty happening from one end of the arcade to the other.

Hakata Geigi Procession Experience

Hakata is one of the few places in Japan where geigi culture is still actively preserved. This special program offers participants the chance to dress in authentic Hakata geigi style and join real Hakata geigi in an oneri, a traditional procession through the streets of the historic Hakata district.

Participants dress in kimono and receive geigi-style hair and makeup before joining the procession. The full outfit includes a formal black tomesode kimono and a Hakata Kenjo obi tied in the distinctive yanagi musubi style.

Once dressed, participants join the geigi on a walk through locations including Kawabata Shopping Arcade. The program is also scheduled to include viewing the lighting ceremony for the Hakata Old Town Festival and a special visit to Jotenji Temple.

More than simply dressing up for photographs, this is a rare opportunity to experience Hakata’s living geigi culture while taking part in it on the streets where the tradition developed.

Hakata Old Town Light-up Walk 2026

One of Hakata’s most atmospheric autumn events, the Hakata Old Town Light-up Walk opens historic temples, shrines, and gardens after dark for a special nighttime experience. Some areas that are normally closed to the public also become accessible, giving visitors a rare chance to explore illuminated sites such as Jotenji Temple, Tochoji Temple, and Myorakuji Temple while walking through the narrow streets of Hakata Old Town.

As evening falls, temple gates, stone paths, wooden buildings, and garden spaces take on a different character under carefully arranged lighting. Moving from one site to the next, visitors can enjoy the contrast between glowing temple grounds and the darker streets in between, making the walk itself part of the experience.

The 2026 theme is “STARS: Constellations of Light Across Time, Illuminating the Future.” Several locations, including Kushida Shrine and Hakata Sennen-no-Mon Gate, can be enjoyed free of charge. Kushida Shrine will also host jazz performances and sake tasting, adding music and local flavor to an autumn evening in historic Hakata.
