Long Weekend – 8 Great Events!

Looking for something to do over the long weekend? Fukuoka Now has eight great ideas for things to do between Oct. 6~8. There’s something for everyone: ranging from international and traditional Japanese cultural events to cocktail and beer parties, antique markets and even some dancing! Enjoy your well-deserved three days off by getting out and about in Fukuoka!

1. Tomyo Concert 2012 in Kotokuji
The 750 year old buddhist temple of Kotokuji is illuminated fantastically for this concert. Ethereal sounds of ocarina and piano drift across the grounds, as Fukuoka musician Naoko Wada performs on a candlelit stage. Nearby, a large camphor tree will be illuminated.

2. Nigerian Day Event & After Party
The Nigerian Union Kyushu is celebrating Nigerian Day 2012 with a free cultural event on Oct. 6 (Sat.) from 13:00~16:30 at ACROS Fukuoka. Both educational and entertaining, the event includes a presentation about Nigeria, games and prizes, plus Nigerian-Japanese music and traditional Nigerian drumming/dancing. And the fun doesn’t stop there! From 17:00~23:00 there will be an after-party at Onsa Live Restaurant and Bar. Entry is FREE and you can enjoy free Nigerian food as you dance to African music beats. 3. No Dance No Life
On Sat., Oct. 6 a dance event will be held at Fukuoka Tower to draw attention to the “no dancing laws” which prevent bars without special licensing to allow dancing. Performers including Fresh Juice, Toshi Jackson, Meyonce, etc. will perform. Signatures will be collected for a petition to amend these laws. 4. Antiquing at “Bayside Market”
This stylish, nostalgia-filled antique market is a sister event of the well known “Gokoku Shrine Flea Market”. Browse the selection of antique furniture, and vintage goods from the US, UK, France, Germany and Japan. You can also pick fresh vegetables from American old style vegetable carts, check out the marche style shops, and grab a bite to eat at the stalls of Fukuoka’s well-known bakeries and coffee shops. A great day out!

5. Kyushu Beer Festa
Beer lovers prepare– 15 brewers from across Japan come together for the festival’s third annual edition. Grab a glass at the entrance and visit each brewer’s booth to enjoy all-you-can-drink top quality craft beer and tasty appetizers. Buy bottles to take home too!

6. VIVA! Hakata/Wadaiko Festival in Tochoji
Immerse yourself in the rhythms of traditional Japan, as five wadaiko (Japanese drumming) troupes perform at Tochoji temple, known as the oldest power spot in Japan. There’s also balloon animal classes, free caricature, and stalls selling coffee and zenzai (sweetened azuki/red bean soup).

7. Nagasaki Kunchi
Held every Autumn, this three-day festival originated in 1634 when two female performers dedicated a new dance to the Suwa Shrine. The dance, called “Niwasaki-mawari”, is now registered as a national cultural asset and is performed at several spots in town.

8. Cocktail Party in Fukuoka
Around 1,000 guests will gather at Hotel New Otani for a high class cocktail party on Monday Oct. 8. The party celebrates the 10th anniversary of “Bar Kurayoshi” in Nakasu, owned by Mr. Koji Kurayashi. As an ex-bartender of Hotel New Otani, and currently a special advisor of the Hotel Barman’s Association Japan, Mr. Kurayoshi is certainly experienced in cocktails. There will be around 40 different top quality cocktails available, including creations by this year’s Cocktail Grand Prix winners. The ¥10,000 ticket price includes all-you-can-drink cocktails and drinks for the evening. Apart from cocktails, there’s wine, sparkling wine and Japanese sake on offer, as well as 27 brands of local and international liquor in the “testing corner”. Entertainment includes displays of flair bartending, illusion magic and dance shows. Mr. Kurayoshi says “It’s a rare chance to enjoy the creations of the top bartenders from all over Japan in one place”.
