We were lucky enough to attend one of this summer’s last yukata parties, hosted by the delectable Moët & Chandon at the Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk. Taking the uchiwa (folding fans) which were to be our passes for the evening (as well as a great souvenir), we made our way to the Clouds Lounge & Bar on the 34th floor. But before we even so much as touched a champagne glass, we were floored by the stunning nightscape, which twinkled at us through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
As we entered the first of the fabulous rooms, we were slightly intimidated by the elegance of the yukata-wearing guests: everyone had clearly employed professionals to do their hair and makeup. But we were soon mingling happily (perhaps aided by the three glasses of champagne included in the ticket price), bonding over the beautiful view and enjoying the music provided by DJs from local radio station Love FM.
Once we had taken in the tastefully laid out rooms, we decided to try some of the tasty food. The sumptuous buffet was laid with all manner of appealing dishes, but the stars of the show were really the desserts. Macarons, cakes, and seemingly every fruit tart known to man were available, and all the guests were heaping their plates with sweet treats (I have nothing but admiration for the women who managed to load three plates at once – I can only assume her thumbs have reached the next step in our evolution).
At 9pm we left for home, full of delicious food, memories of beautiful yukata, and exquisite bubbles. Our champagne glasses had truly runneth over.
Moët & Chandon and Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk will be hosting another yukata party next summer. Keep checking the Fukuoka Now event listings for news of next year’s party and other events.
